“Come on, after that seeing something cute should do us some good.” Hermione said as she pulled me into a place labeled Magical Menagerie. Caged ravens croaked as we walked in and cats of every color meowed from high atop shelves. “This is where I got Crookshanks.” She told me as we walked around aimlessly. I just nodded. While Hermione and I were watching a little white kitten play with a ball of pink yarn I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. I looked over to see a fuzzy black and white puppy. He looked at me curiously and took a hesitant step forward.
“Unbelievable.” A woman with black, thick rimmed glasses said as she shook her head. As she spoke the puppy jumped and ran the short distance to my lap. The woman’s mouth dropped open and then she sighed. “We found him a few days ago. Seems to be only a few weeks old. He hasn’t gone near a single person the whole time. Not even me.” She informed me. “I’m not letting you leave without him.” She said pointing a finger at me. “But I-I’m going to Hogwarts. I can’t take him with me. My parents would never let me anyway. We don’t have enough money.” I explained. I was a bit stunned by all of this.
“But you want him don’t you Rosella?” Hermione asked. “Well…yeah.” I said looking back at her. “Why don’t you ask your mom? She’s right there.” She said pointing out the window. “Okay.” I said feeling nervous about it. The puppy reminded me of…well…me. I felt like I had to take him and I really wanted to. I scooped him up and held him against my chest as I stood up. “I’ll be back.” I said taking a deep breath. I walked out the door and crossed the short distance to the other side of the alley where my mom was. “Mom.” I said to get her attention. “Oh, oh.” She said when she saw me and then when she saw the puppy.
“The lady at Magical Menagerie said that I’m the only person he’s not been afraid of. She said they found him a few days ago. She also said she wouldn’t let me leave without him.” I explained in one big rush. “Rosella, we…” Someone cut her off before she could finish. “Oh! What a cute little dog.” A familiar voice said as a hand reached out stroked his head. He stopped shaking and licked the person’s hand. I looked up to see Albus Dumbledore. “Is he yours?” He asked me. “Oh…um…no. We don’t have enough money and I can’t take him to Hogwarts.” I answered slowly. “Hm, come with me.” He said with a gentle smile and mischievous glint in his eyes.
My mom and I followed him into Magical Menagerie. “Hello Miss Granger.” He greeted Hermione brightly. “Hello Professor.” She said looking astonished. She gave me a questioning look and I just shrugged and smiled. Dumbledore talked with my mother and the woman who apparently owns the shop. A few minutes later they turned to Hermione and me. “You can have him.” My mom said. I hugged her and thanked her a million times while being careful not to squish the puppy.
“And you can take him to Hogwarts as well.” Dumbledore informed me. “Our grounds keeper, Hagrid, should be able to provide any food you need for him. Having a dog is a big responsibility you know. Along with your school work you will have a lot to do to keep him in good shape.” He said. He told me about how this breed of dog herds sheep and I would have to take him out to exercise every day. He is half Crup so I would have to get a book and read up on them. And then it turns out that he is part Gytrash and they only live at Hogwarts. I would also have to read about them.
Dumbledore paid the four galleons for him and the woman gave us a brush, grooming kit, pet care book, black leash and collar for free. By the time we left I decided to name him Tobi. I thanked Dumbledore before he left and we headed to the Leakey Cauldron. “Ron!” I called as we walked in. He turned around from his place at one of the tables with Scabbers. “I got a puppy!” I exclaimed happily as I sat next to him. I explained the whole thing to him in one big rush hoping I wouldn’t have to repeat myself.
